Council Member Glen Johnson called the meeting to order at 6:00pm

City Manager Kim Worley asked the commission to combine item 1 City's Proposed Infrastructure Surtax Partnership Project(s) Update and item 3 Fire Suppression System for the Constellation Charter School. 

 

Council Member Shannon Boal moved to accept the agenda with the proposed changes.

2nd Council Member Caroly Wade

The motion carried 5-0.

 

Commissioner Cornell moved approval of the agenda with the proposed changes combining items 1 and 3.

2nd Commissioner Wheeler

The motion carried 3-0 with Vice Chair Chestnut and Commissioner Prizzia absent.

City Manager Kim Worley presented the above item.

 

Item 1 City's Proposed Infrastructure Surtax Partnership Project(s) Update and item 3 Fire Suppression System for the Constellation Charter School were combined and discussed together. 

 

The Alachua County Fire Marshall has advised Constellation Charter and the City of Waldo that in order to keep the school in Waldo at the Waldo City Square a fire sprinkler system must be installed at the Noe Wing where the school is located in order to keep the school open. The School has more out of town Students than Waldo citizens so it benefits the students, parents, school and city of Waldo. 

 

Estimated cost of the project: $150,000.00 County Match $75,000.00

 

Commissioner Cornell, Commissioner Wheeler, and Chair Alford presented comments. 

Chair Alford, Council Member Carolyn Wade, Council Member Shannon Boal, Alachua County Fire Chief Chuck, Council Member Monique Taylor, and Commissioner Cornell presented comments on the above item. 

 

Commissioner Cornell moved to refer to staff to bring back an estimate and that as long as it is align with the City of Waldo sharing half the cost the Commission will review it at a future meeting.

The motion carried 3-0 with Vice Chair Chestnut and Commissioner Prizzia absent.

Council Member Monique Taylor presented the above item to the commission. Council Member Taylor would like the County or DOT help with finding a way to slow down traffic Downtown/301 with a speed light or something similar.

Commissioner Cornell moved to ask staff to look at both issues in conjunction with helping the City of Waldo with both a traffic light in school zones and a cross walk light with DOT.

Assistant Public Works Director Brian Kaufman, Chair Alford, Commissioner Wheeler, and Council Member Monique Taylor presented comments. 

 

Deputy County Manager Carl Smart presented the above item on Gun Violence and Crime. 

Alachua County BoCC Programs Commitment

  • BoCC Adopts Resolution Declaring Gun Violence a Public Health Crisis
  • BoCC Establishes MOU with the City of Gainesville and Santa Fe College to Address Issue Collaboratively
  • BoCC Commits $150,000 to Addressing Gun Violence Prevention
  • Alachua County BoCC Programs Deployed in community Care Call-Outs
  • Alachua Co BoCC Programs will be Key Partners in Gun Violence Task Force
  • Alachua Co Victim Services & Rape Crisis Center Providing Services to Crime Victims 24/7
  • Alachua Co Crisis Center Providing Support and Interventions to Residents in Crisis 24/7
  • Alachua Co Social Services Providing Financial Supports to Individuals and Families in Crisis

Near Term Recommendations

  • Convene a Gun Violence Prevention Task Force
  • Continue participation in Community Care Call-Outs
  • Scale-Up Victim Services & Rape Crisis Center and Crisis Center Outreach and Education Programs

Long Term Recommendation

 

  • Commit to Continuous Improvement based on Data, Evidence, and Peer-to-Peer Learning
  • Support Creation of a Long Term Plan to Address Gun Violence
  • Research and Implement Gun Violence Prevention Initiatives that Focus on Youth and Families.
  • Consider Hosting a Gun Violence Prevention Summit in the Future (2025)

 

Chair Alford, Deputy County Manager Carl Smart, Council Member Shannon Boal, Chair Alford, and Council Member Monique Taylor presented comments. 

 

Public Comment

A citizen presented comments. 

Chair Alford recognized a citizen, and a citizen presented comments. 

Commissioner Cornell thanked everyone for coming out to the meeting, participating and states it was great meeting.

Commissioner Wheeler states she encourages Waldo to work with Hawthorne to see what the county can possibly help with or use some resources to help establish what is happening along 301. Possibly discussing a needs assessment, any input would be appreciated. 

Chair Alford stated she was misrepresented on channel 20 because she does not know anything about the refugees until she attends the meeting to see what former Mayor Poe has to offer. But she does support taking care of all local citizens of Alachua County. 

Council Member Glen Johnson stated a lot has got accomplished and its been a great meeting. Any help from the County on 301 would be appreciated.

Mayor Louie Davis stated he would like to thank the county commission for coming to the meeting. 

Council Member Monique Taylor would like to thank the County Commission for a great meeting. Also, she would like to thank the commission in advance for approving everything needed in waldo. 

Council Member Shannon Boal would like to thank the County for helping the city of Waldo. 

There being no further business before the Board, the meeting was adjourned at 7:47 p.m.
